Andrew Marshall – From Dereham to the Legends Tour: A Journey Still Unfolding

Before I talk about Andrew on tour this week, I must say what a real pleasure it is—nearly forty-seven years after first coaching him—to still be writing about “the lad.” I fully appreciate that he doesn’t need my advice anymore to find his way around a golf course; I suppose, in life, the pupil has become the teacher.

I’ve often written about Andrew, and I still notice things that spark the old teaching instincts in my mind. I know he’s doing great things and continues to climb to new heights in the sport, and I’m personally very proud. But is there more to it than meets the eye?

We’ve all watched Andrew chase that all-important milestone—and now he’s crossed it. He’s won at this level, and I don’t see it as a one-off; it feels like the start of many fine victories to come.

Let me explain my thinking. I’ve seen Andrew’s swing enough to know it’s still beautifully sound. Watching him shoot 63, 63, 64, 63 over four consecutive rounds at Dereham GC last year was proof enough of that—especially with one of those rounds featuring thirteen threes on the card! That’s skill and precision at its finest.

As usual, I caught up with Andrew after his recent finish in Spain and asked how he felt he played. His reply was typically modest:

> “I played lovely—putted really well on the first day, and just average over the weekend.”
Once again, that old adage rings true: “You drive for show and putt for dough.” It’s the fine margin that separates winning from simply finishing near the top.

I’ve also seen him show a new kind of maturity—a true sporting personality. Little things stand out, like turning up this week at Dereham Golf Club, his home, and sharing in his success with everyone there. Over the past week, I saw him buy all sections a drink—something he didn’t need to do, but did. On Saturday, I watched him join in with his old golfing mates at the club and treat them to brunch. It was lovely—he didn’t need to, but did.

I’m still not back to playing 18 holes comfortably yet, but I joined Andy and the boys for 9 holes that day. While meeting at the shop, he didn’t say anything—he just reached into his bag, pulled out a new glove, took the old one off my hand, and replaced it. No words—just actions. That simple gesture took my admiration and respect for him to a new level.

Behind the scenes, he’s still supporting people—at Dereham and beyond—quietly giving something back. He doesn’t need to, but he does. Very proud!

Lately, I’ve noticed something new in Andrew that I really like—his belief, his confidence, and his ability to putt well on the world stage. Those ingredients, together, make for a powerful combination.

With that in mind, let’s turn to this week’s action. Andrew has been back on tour, testing himself once again against the best.

He opened with a flawless 68 (–5) on Friday— the only bogey-free round in the field — to share the early lead in breezy Mediterranean conditions. Friday’s 74 (+1) slowed his momentum slightly, but a composed final-day 72 (–1) on Sunday saw him finish with a total of 214 (–5), securing 13th place overall.

Round Score To Par Highlights

R1 68 –5 Bogey-free; birdies at 1, 9, 10, 11 & 18

? Closing Thoughts

This latest performance reinforces what we’ve long known at Dereham — that Andrew Marshall is not just a fine professional but a fine person. His blend of humility, discipline, and confidence continues to inspire every member who’s watched him grow from junior talent to international competitor.

As the Legends Tour season moves toward its close, Andrew sits 12th in the Order of Merit — a testament to his consistency, belief, and the strength of character that has defined his career from the very beginning.

All of us at Dereham Golf Club are immensely proud of him — not just for how he plays, but for who he is.
