During the winter months, there may be times when the course is closed or access is restricted even when conditions appear playable. This most commonly occurs during freeze–thaw periods.

While the surface may look fine, thawing ground can be extremely vulnerable. Foot traffic at this time can cause serious damage to greens and tees, with effects that may take months to repair and impact playing quality well into the season.
