Summer League is back......!
Great first week of entries - but you can still join in!
Summer League golf returned to Mersey Valley with a strong opening-week turnout as 73 players have entered and 60 made it to the tee for the first outing of the campaign, conditions made testing by fading light and early-season uncertainty.

At the top of the leaderboard, Andrew Holland set the early pace with an excellent 21 Stableford points to claim first place. On an evening where clean contact rather than length was rewarded, Holland’s score also stood out as the lowest gross of the day, establishing him as the early standard-bearer.

That performance carried added significance given his starting time. One of the later groups out, Andy Holland had to contend with a low sun that turned several fairways into guessing games. He did more than enough guessing correctly, finding both his ball and his form at just the right moments to edge clear of Anthony Hammond and Lawrence King.

Behind him, the leaderboard was tightly packed, with six players separated by a single point and a healthy mix of familiar summer-league contenders pushing hard from the outset. Consistent scoring rather than flashes of brilliance proved the order of the day, and there was little room for recovery after mistakes.

After a winter of success, attention inevitably settled on Jon Moore and Ken Gough. Moore, captaining proceedings, made a solid rather than spectacular start with 17 points, placing him just outside the leading group but firmly in contention as the series develops. It was a round that hinted at more to come once sharpness returns.

Ken Gough, by contrast, endured a far tougher evening. Unable to build momentum, he finished well down the field on 10 points and will know he faces early work if he is to convert winter promise into summer results.

With week one complete, the tone is set for the months ahead. Scoring looks tight, margins are slim, and as Andy Holland proved, even a sinking sun need not dim title ambitions.
