On a beautiful sunny morning with only the hint of a breeze, Gavin, Ness, and Alasdair were the first three ball out and carried the “flag” with them to set the marker for the day, Gavin playing a strong round to putt out on the 18th green and leave the marker there for others to better if they could.
The general consensus on the day was that there were a lot of lip out putts, some hitting the back of the hole dead centre and still staying out, and fast greens. A respectable number played incredibly well and under their playing handicaps.
It was the later groups out that started to provide the drama, with Chris Chaundy having four shots up the first for the second time around and leaving the flag a foot or so short of the hole. This was a super effort. As he was walking back to the clubhouse quite rightly hugely but modestly pleased with his performance, Darren Edwards and Steve Finn (sensibly jettisoning their playing partner to get the drinks ordered) also headed up the first. Darren only had one shot but had continued his good recent form with another well managed round. Club Captain Steve had four shots up his sleeve, but the emotion of Tottenham picking up points the previous day saw a quickening of the swing tempo and loss of accuracy which proved too challenging for his powers of recovery, leaving Chris still out in front.
They thought it was all over. Who could top that? Christian Harvey strode purposefully to the first tee with a remarkable 5 shots left in the tank. The challenge was well and truly on. Although not a Spurs supporter, Christian also had a moment or two up the fairway and decided to visit the bushes. His recovery was not quite good enough so Chris Chaundy was the deserved winner.
As Steve was about to hand the trophy to Chris, a slightly confused but lovely man grabbed the trophy thinking he was actually the winner. Fortunately, his carers came to take him back to his pint and the trophy ceremony was then completed, despite a late and desperate challenge to disqualify Chris on the grounds he wasn’t wearing tailored golf shorts.
Many of the competitors stayed on for food and drinks and helped to make the day a successful one with a buoyant atmosphere.
The Flag event is a great and relaxed way to dip your toes into a competition. It is a non-qualifier for handicap purposes, meaning the winners will not see their handicaps cut, and going out in a three ball will help you get used to competition formats and having a competition card in your hand.
Do also please come to the Thursday night social evenings from 6 and mix in to play nine holes with the option of handing a general play card in if you wish to do so.
