It was announced:
“Stand up for the Ulsterman - Stewart Preston (SP) & his partner Paul ‘PC’ Crilley
and their opponents Tom Scotto (TS) & Steven Marlow (SM).
In 1952, W G Spowart & W Moore lifted the Stewart Cup for the first time. The membership were quick to buy into the concept of a knockout competition all in the one week. Through the years it morphed into a hugely anticipated annual social event and foursomes was the perfect format for this unique GGC competition. It is no coincidence that Nevin’s books documenting the Club’s history, list the Stewart Cup winners, alongside those of the Royal Exchange Vase and Club Championship.

The 2026 FINAL
Steven & PC drove the final in.
• PC&SP were quick out the traps 2up after the 3rd
• TS&SM won the 4th - took ‘one against the head’ - at the 6th - (SP&PCs only shot). Match A/S
• TS&SM won the 7th (1up)
• TS&SM 1up at the turn
• A pair of 5s was good enough at the 10th & 12th for TS&SM to extend their lead (3up)
• Dormie 3 on the 16th Tee. TS&SM had a hand on the Cup
• PC&SP ‘the Come Back Kings’ In their Semi - 4dn with 5 to play - they won at the 20th
• Sadly the physical and emotional exertions had paid their toll and their challenge finished at the 16th
Fate had thrown Tom & Steven and PC & Stewart together. What a fabulous unexpected week for both pairings.
Captain Stuart Neilson presented The Stewart Cup dating from 1881 and presented by J Y Stewart. It was Re-invented for our Foursomes competition in 1952. Congratulations to Tom & Steven their names will be etched on the Stewart Cup Board forever.
Sadly for PC a hat-trick of defeats. As they say, it’s better to have fought and lost….
The good news, one more for the re-union dinner - Willie Spowart (2004) - son of the inaugural winner, Donald ‘DBG’ Neilson (2010) and now Stewart Preston (2026).
Bye the way….No golf is ever discussed.
