Dereham Golf Club played the first leg of this year’s Captains’ Friendly against Eaton Golf Club at Eaton on Friday.
Six pairs took up the challenge, and what a wonderful day it proved to be. I was delighted to be invited to play alongside the Captain, and although Dereham were beaten overall by 12 holes, the match was far closer than the final score suggests. Four of our pairs either lost or halved their games by just one hole, although two teams were well beaten on the day.
There was some excellent golf from both sides, including one Eaton pair who apparently parred the back nine gross. The course was in wonderful condition, and despite the extremely hot weather, the welcome from our close friends at Eaton was excellent, as always. Dereham were made to feel most welcome throughout.
For now, Eaton fully deserved their home win, but Dereham will be looking to sharpen their game ahead of the return match in September. After the match, the Captains exchanged thanks, with Dave laying down the challenge for the return fixture.
The sport was the real winner on Friday. A great day was had by all.
