BGC Men's TSU Team News - 27 May 2026
Hi everyone,

Welcome to Team News Week 4! What an incredible evening we had at home to Cleveland Golf Club. Facing a formidable scratch section with handicaps ranging from +4 to 2, our team truly rose to the occasion and delivered a spectacular performance, winning 12 points to 0. Our winning players included Josh Thompson with a decisive 6&5 win, Jacob Crowle edging out a close match 1up, Andy Hood finishing 4&3, Marc Symington taking his match 3&2, Taylor Briggs securing a 1up victory, and our junior player Sam Griffiths earning his first win in the men’s team with a well deserved 3&1 - congratulations, Sam! Here’s to many more victories ahead.

Switching over to the handicap section, we are celebrating another strong result: Billingham 9 points, Cleveland 3 points. Our winning line-up featured Graeme Nimmo (6&5), Nic Winstanley (5&4), Steve Smart (5&4), and Will Bellerby (3&2), with Graeme Speight battling for a half point. Special mention to Daniel Spence, who, despite a tough 5&3 loss, put in a tremendous effort, it just wasn’t his night on the greens! Fantastic work from every single player. Win or lose, it is your collective effort and camaraderie that define us as a team, and we could not be prouder.

The final score for the evening: Billingham GC 21 points, Cleveland 3 points.

A heartfelt thank you goes out to our squad members who were not in action this week but still showed up to support their team-mates: Darren Hurst, Craig Ewen, Paul McGrath, and Tom Lee, with his son Isaac.

Thanks are also due to our dedicated caddies; Steven Lowth, Colin Spence, Martin Griffiths, and Darren Crowle, your support for the players is invaluable. And of course, a big round of applause for our supporters who turned out once again to cheer on the team: Captain Albert Spence BEM, President Stewart Openshaw, Steve Carter (the chocolate man for Andy Hood), Terry Buckley, Terry Conlon, Ian Crowle, Jack Hurst, Dave McNeill, Tony Littlefair, our wonderful green staff member Kirsty Smart, and not forgetting Robert Scotson Smith and his co-pilot Howard Gill, who keep everyone updated on the team’s progress each week.

A special thank you to John Dales and his greens staff for presenting the course in an excellent condition, what a difference a bit of sunshine can make! And finally, to Beth and her entire team: your exceptional service and delicious food were once again a highlight for everyone. The homemade lasagna crafted by Suzannah (along with Beth’s signature bechamel sauce) was a huge hit, and Kiera, Archie, and Katy made sure no one went hungry or thirsty. Your efforts did not go unnoticed and were greatly appreciated by both teams.

Looking ahead, next Wednesday, 3rd June, we’re away at Rockcliffe Hall. We would love to see as many supporters there as possible. Your encouragement means the world to the lads. Please remember to leave the binoculars at home or we might get banned or kicked out the league for spying! And, as I always say, surely it beats watching the soaps on TV.

Thank you again to everyone for your unwavering support, enthusiasm, and team spirit. You make Billingham Golf Club such a special place to be.

Best regards,
Neil Kerr & Tony Evans
