Bellis claims June Medal as a bumper 2's pot steals the show!
David Bellis delivered a superb performance to win the Seniors June Medal at Mersey Valley with an excellent nett 68 in a competitive field.
He finished one shot clear of Robert WJ Atherton, who took second place on nett 69 while also recording the lowest gross score of the day in a fine all-round display. Barry Candeland, Ian Swift and Rod Boardman shared third place on nett 70 as scoring remained strong throughout the division.
While the medal itself produced quality golf, the biggest talking point of the day came from the twos competition, which had rolled over from the previous week to create a sizeable bumper pot.
With no winners last time out, the increased prize fund added extra incentive on the par threes — and it paid off for a number of players who managed to get their names on the list.
Twos were recorded by Mark Peters at the 7th, Alex Wadlewski at the 2nd, Peter Connor at the 10th, Michael Donohue (snr) at the 7th, Matthew Wain at the 2nd, Stuart Ogilvie at the 7th and Alan Robinson at the 2nd, ensuring the rollover pot was widely shared.
However, the standout return came from Atherton, who helped himself to not one but two twos — at the 7th and 15th — securing a double share of the enhanced payout to cap an exceptional day’s golf.
His combination of a runner-up finish and a brace of twos meant he walked away as one of the day’s biggest winners, hopefully the drinks were firmly on him afterwards.
With a medal winner crowned and a bumper twos fund finally paid out, it proved to be a memorable and enjoyable day for the senior section.
The course really is looking at it's best as we move into the most important and anticipated comps of the year and this correspondent simply cannot wait!
