Gentlemen's Invitation Day
Report and Results
The Gentlemen’s Invitation Day took place last Friday with 100 members and guests taking part in what many agree is ‘the best golf day of the year’. The day got off to a bit of a shaky start with mist and fog closing the course first thing. However, the golfing gods were smiling and the play commenced at 8.30am, with just a 15 minute delay. (We were much more fortunate than La Moye where the Durell charity day was restricted to 9-holes only as the course did not open until mid-morning. The vagaries of island weather!). Once the fog had lifted the conditions were cool but benign, without a breath of wind – and the scores reflected those conditions. The format for the morning round was Better ball, and three pairs came in with 45 Stableford points. Philip Bolton & Dennis Lavin, Nick Butt & Peter Dixon and John Tanguy and Luke Kellett. Out of the 50 pairs playing, 40 were level par (36 points) or above! After the traditional seafood platter lunch, play started at 3.00pm for the afternoon greensomes. By now the last remnants of the morning mist and fog had completely cleared and the sun was out and the temperature remained a pleasant 24 degrees. Again there was little or no wind in the afternoon and the scores reflected the excellent conditions. John Tanguy and Luke Kellett improved on their morning score – no mean feat considering it is the harder format – with 46 stableford points. Not surprising that they won the overall event with a 91 point total. The next best in the afternoon with 42 points were Peter Horsfall & Edouardo Afonso and then Paul Langdon and Jon McCulloch with 41points. Once play was completed in the afternoon all the players changed and enjoyed another excellent meal followed by the prize giving. The full results are below with all 9 pairs receiving a prize – no pair can win more than one prize. The overall winners are pictured with Men’s Captain Mat Hague along with the trophy which is an addition this year following the kind donation of Steven Bowen.
