Royal Perth is a fairly new fixture for Glasgow Golf Club, with it only being contested four times previously (all won by Glasgow).
After excellent hospitality in the opulent Perth clubhouse, it seemed that Perth were taking things seriously. The large glasses of wine proffered to Glasgow were gratifyingly substantial, whilst all the Perth team appeared to “be driving”!
The tee sheets confirmed they meant to wrestle the trophy from Glasgow. First on the team sheet list was Stuart Wilson, the former 2004 Amateur Champion, who is the Manager at Blairgowrie, where a lot of the Perth team play. He had been drafted in as a new member and this was his first game for the Perth team. Bill Duncan, the Perth Captain, smiled as his secret weapon birdied the first. His smile faded however as Glasgow followed suit with a birdie and a stroke to take the hole.
In near perfect conditions for golf (only 5 minutes’ rain) the standard of golf was excellent across the teams. In the end, it was not to be for Perth as Glasgow were victorious 3½ -2½.
Back in the clubhouse for tea & crumpets, everyone commented on the quality of the North Inch course. The greens in particular were probably the best they have ever been.
Newcomers to the fixture also commented on the beautiful views along the banks of the Tay. It was 9 pm by the time that the bus got back to Killie, but all agreed it was an excellent day with all the necessary ingredients - great food, drink, weather, superb golf course and the camaraderie of the Glasgow team and the new friendships made with the Perth boys.
Bring on next year!
