Dear members, It has been another busy, productive and ultimately successful year for the Club. I'd like to reflect on some of the key developments over the past twelve months and look ahead to some of the changes planned for the future. Our Course The Board's principal responsibility remains the financial sustainability of the club. Our objective is simple, and set out in our latest Strategic Plan: to provide the best golfing facilities possible within the resources available. A primary focus of the Boards activities is therefore on our most important asset, the Course itself. Over the couple of years members will have seen significant investment across the course. New and refurbished tees and bunkers are now in play, new grass-cutting regimes have enhanced the presentation around the greens, paths have been improved, irrigation has been upgraded, and many smaller projects have all contributed to making the course better than ever. An important part of our long-term planning has been the use of external expertise. This year we commissioned the R&A's agronomy consultants to review our greens strategy. Their report was highly complimentary about the quality of our course while also identifying areas where further improvements could be made. Richie and the greenkeeping team are already implementing those recommendations, and I know many of you appreciated having the opportunity to read the report yourselves. We're also embracing new technology. The robotic mowers that many of you have seen in operation are just one example of how we're modernising our maintenance practices. These innovations will allow our greenkeeping team to work more efficiently while freeing up valuable time for other improvement projects across the course. There are challenges however. Construction work can sometimes be disruptive, equipment inevitably fails from time to time, but by far our greatest challenge continues to be the weather. Last year we experienced drought. This has now been repeated this year. Also this year the growing season barely started until June after an unusually cool and dry spring, only to be followed by an intense heatwave that has left much of the course severely scorched. Maintaining high-quality playing conditions in such extremes is becoming increasingly difficult. Despite those conditions, Richard, Phil, Richie and the entire greenkeeping team have done an outstanding job in providing members with a course that has remained both enjoyable and challenging throughout the season. Looking ahead, climate change means these weather extremes may become more common, something the we need to plan for. As an example of this, we are investing in our irrigation system and also exploring ways to increase water storage for periods of drought. This is only a snapshot of the work taking place behind the scenes, and I encourage members to continue reading the regular course updates produced by the team. Governance and Continuous Improvement The Board is equally committed to ensuring that the Club is managed as effectively and professionally as possible. This year we engaged Club59, an independent assessor of leading golf clubs, to conduct a comprehensive review of every aspect of the member experience using their well-known "mystery shopper" programme. Their findings placed our Club within the top 30% of premier golf clubs nationally. While we're naturally pleased with that result, the real value lies in the constructive feedback they provided, which will help us continue to improve. Later this year we'll also undertake our biennial Members' Survey, which remains one of the most valuable ways of understanding members' views. In addition, our Members' Forum following the survey will provide an opportunity for open discussion on general issues and any raised as a result of the survey. We are hoping to conduct the survey and the Forum by the end of October Good governance also means continually reviewing how we operate. During the year we've consulted extensively on proposals to reduce the size of the Board while modernising aspects of our governance arrangements. At this years AGM Members voted for the reduction in the number of Directors from 10 to 7, which has been introduced. Within our committee structure we've also established a new Golf Committee, bringing together responsibility for handicapping, rules and disciplinary matters to provide greater consistency across all golfing sections. Another significant operational change has been our move to a cashless club. As anticipated, this has reduced administration, improved security, simplified financial controls and released valuable staff time that can be better used serving members. Membership Membership subscriptions remain the financial foundation of our Club. Improvements in our financial systems has allowed the Board to introduce several changes designed not only to strengthen the Club financially but also to improve the overall member experience. These include ; introducing a membership cap with a one-in, one-out policy, reintroducing a joining fee and removing one of the age-related discounted subscription categories. As a result early indications are that Revenue has improved, membership remains stable, and demand to join the Club continues to be very strong (we have a waiting list of potential new members). One of the most encouraging developments this year has been the continued growth of both our Ladies' and Junior Sections. Our "New to Golf" programme, together with the outstanding support provided by the Ladies' Section, our PGA professionals and our excellent coaching facilities, has attracted an increase in new members. These sections are important to the long-term future of the Club, and everyone involved deserves enormous credit. Other Developments Our Food and Beverage operation is currently going through a period of transition following the departure of several key members of staff. Various options are being explored and I’d like to thank members for their patience and understanding while this work continues. The driving range continues to exceed expectations, generating two to three times the income of the original facility. The swing rooms remain well used by our PGA professionals, and further work is underway to increase utilisation through enhanced coaching programmes. Not everything, however, can be solved through investment alone. Slow play continues to affect many members' enjoyment of the game, and we still encounter instances where basic golfing etiquette is not always observed. These are issues that require all of us to play our part. Respect for fellow members and for the traditions of the game remains everyone's responsibility. Looking Ahead The coming year will bring a number of new initiatives and improvements. We will launch a new, more user-friendly website offering greater access to online services. We'll continue expanding the use of robotic mowing technology, allowing our greenkeeping team to focus on further course improvements. We've also committed funding to refurbish the front entrance to the Club, creating a more welcoming first impression for members and visitors alike. Our Staff We've seen a number of staff changes over the past year. In particular, I'd like to thank Martin Betts for more than a decade of dedicated service to the Club and wish him every success in his new role. On behalf of the Board and all members, I offer my sincere thanks to every member of staff. Their professionalism and commitment allow the rest of us to enjoy everything this Club has to offer. I'd also like to thank our Captain and Lady Captain for their support throughout the year and for everything they have contributed to the life of the Club. Finally, my thanks go to the many volunteers who serve on committees, organise competitions, repair divots, retrieve golf balls from the driving range and quietly undertake countless other tasks that often go unnoticed. Without your time and commitment this Club simply could not function as effectively or as affordably as it does. New volunteers required It is vital that we attract more people to volunteer to contribute to the committees and the occasional voluntary assistance that is required. If you think that you can contribute and wish to discuss volunteering, please make yourself known to myself, Phil or any of the existing Board or committee members.
