Brett Abson has become the second consecutive Halifax winner of the RT Morley Trophy, following an outstanding match play campaign in 2026.
Winning five matches in one section is an impressive achievement in itself. To win four of them away from home makes Brett’s success even more remarkable.
His journey culminated in a thrilling section final at Willow Valley, where the match was decided on the last hole by a superb 20-foot putt.
The semi-final was played at Crow Nest against Chris Furniss of Crosland Heath. Brett produced a strong performance to secure a 4&2 victory on the 16th hole. Preparation also played its part, with particular thanks to Pete Coenen for taking the time to play the course with Brett during the week leading up to the match.
The final brought a challenge against Rob Buchanan of Bradley Park, with Brett receiving five shots. Played in excellent spirit, the match was not always a showcase of great golf, with nerves affecting both players. Nevertheless, it remained closely contested throughout.
Having never been behind, Brett held a narrow one-hole advantage with five holes remaining. By that stage, all five of Brett’s extra shots had been used, leaving the match finely balanced.
The decisive moment then arrived.
Brett won the 14th, 15th and 16th holes in succession to secure another 4&2 victory and claim the RT Morley title for 2026.
It was a memorable performance built on determination, composure and the ability to deliver when it mattered most: five wins, four away from home and a final sealed with a run of three consecutive holes.
An outstanding match play campaign; and a second successive RT Morley title for Halifax.
Who will step up to the plate next year and make it three in a row?
